H O R N E L L — J e f f Hayden, regional general manager of
The Hornell Evening Tribune, Wellsville Daily Reporter and Genesee Country
Express, has named Chris Potter as the new regional editor for the three
Gatehouse Media newspapers. Potter will replace John Anderson, who was named
the managing editor of the Batavia Daily News. Anderson’s last day is today. “I
have worked in Hornell and Wellsville since 1992 and the employees have been
like family,” said Anderson. “I am going to miss working with so many in the communities
and the great relationships we have built. However, the newspaper is very
strong in Hornell, Wellsville and Dansville and Chris Potter is a true leader.
During his time in Hornell and Wellsville he earned the trust of the readers
and those he reported on.” Hayden said, “Over the past 19 years John has built an
editorial foundation based on excellence. John is one of the hardest working editors
I have had the pleasure of working with. Chris is a very hardworking and
dedicated editor. Along with our editorial staff, Chris will continue to
deliver excellent daily and weekly products for our readership.” Potter, a 2005
graduate of Scio Central School, earned Communications/ Journalism and
Political Science degrees from St. John Fisher College. Potter started his
career at The Evening Tribune as a sports and outdoors writer in 2009. He then went
on to become the Sports Editor of The Wellsville Daily Reporter in 2014, and
then Regional Sports Editor about a year thereafter. He has been recognized with
a number of state awards, including recent honors for overseeing The Spectator
Great 8 special section and his Section V basketball coverage. In addition to
writing, he enjoys reading, spending time in the outdoors, following the Bills,
Tar Heels and Yankees, and a game of pick-up basketball. He serves on the board
of Genesee River Wilds, a local non-profit organization. “I am excited to
take on a bigger role in our Hornell, Wellsville and Dansville newsrooms,” said
Potter. “Over the years I’ve spent time in every town in our coverage area,
covering games and events while getting to know the people that call our region
home and make it such a great place to live. Exciting things are happening in
our communities. I look forward to our dedicated staff continuing to provide top-notch
coverage both in print and digitally.” Anderson started his career writing
sports at the Batavia Daily News and was the sports editor of the Wellsville
Daily Reporter before running the Allegany County Bureau of the Olean Times Herald.
He came back as managing editor of the Daily Reporter in 2003, then was named
editor of the Evening Tribune, Sunday Spectator and Genesee Country Express, serving
as a regional editor since 2012. He also broadcasts basketball and football
games on WLSV AM790 and has been involved in several organizations in
Wellsville from the Duke Hose Fire Company to the Allegany County United Way. Anderson
coached a Little League senior division team to three New York State
championship appearances, winning one state title.
