HOUGHTON, NY - September 19, 2017 - The Ortlip Art Gallery at Houghton College is pleased to host an exhibition of works by artist and 1958 alumnus Ben Frank Moss III. A public reception event will be held on September 30, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Center for Fine Arts at the Ortlip Gallery.
“A Focus on Drawing: Works on Paper by Ben Frank Moss” is the second display of works in the collection of more than 300 paintings, drawings, and prints by Moss, acquired for Houghton College’s permanent art collection by bequest of the artist.
Known for his use of luminous color and expressive form, Moss’s lasting commitment to observation and expression has transformed ordinary materials into extraordinary moments on paper. In this exhibition, his spontaneous marks join together with practiced gestures in a captivating dance that welcomes viewers into their harmonious combination of elements.
In 2016, Moss and his wife Jean established an endowment fund to enhance the Ortlip Art Gallery program with financial support for an annual invitational exhibition, featuring emerging and established artists whose works bring a unique voice to contemporary art.
In the art studio at Houghton College in 1954, Moss first developed his creative instincts in painting and drawing. As an artist and educator, Moss was named the George Frederick Jewett Professor Emeritus of Studio Art at Dartmouth College and an Academician of the National Academy of Art and Design. He has been featured extensively in exhibitions nationally and abroad.
His work is currently represented in more than 50 public collections, among them Yale University Art Gallery, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, Butler Institute of American Art, the National Academy of Art and Design, and more than 375 major private collections.
