FRIENDSHIP, NY - Local churches are joining with the Friendship Free Library in a new initiative to recycle plastic films and bags, with an opportunity for the library to obtain a free park-style bench if it reaches a collection milestone.

The What God is Doing in Friendship ny alliance of participating churches  have placed bins at all five town worship facility locations to assist with the venture, expanding the noon to 5PM Tuesday-Saturday collection times only available previously during library open hours.

The initiative involves collecting plastic bags from stores, such as those containing produce and ice, along with retailer shopping bags; storage containers including Ziploc and other reclosable units, bread bags, cereal box liners and case overwraps; and those from deliveries, such as newspaper and dry cleaning sleeves, bubble wrap and plastic e-commerce mailers.

Harder plastics cannot be recycled through this venture and should be disposed of through local government and private trash hauler recycling processes.

All plastic film is required to be clean, dry and free of food and organic residue.

The household bags and wrap are recycled by a national company which transforms them into what is described as earth-friendly composite decking and railings.

If the library provides 1,000 pounds of materials within a one-year period, it will receive a free park-type bench from the recycler.

Collection locations, days and times include:

-- Friendship Free Library, 44 West Main Street - Noon to 5PM Tuesdays-Saturdays.

-- Bible Baptist Church, 43 West Main Street - 9:30AM to 1PM Sundays before and during Sunday School, prayer and weekly service times; and 6PM to 8PM Thursdays during Bible study and prayer gatherings.

Some guidelines for determining if a bag or wrapper is recyclable include it being stretchable, isn't shiny, and doesn't make a crinkly/crunch sound in one's hand, such as with chip bags and candy wrappers.

Frozen, pet and pre-mixed salad bags aren't recyclable, and large labels, tape and adhesive should be cut out or otherwise removed from a bag or wrapping.
