Two men jailed without bail after Livingston County arrest

GENESEO - Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a Livingston County resident and a Monroe County resident on felony and misdemeanor charges following an Investigation.

On May 8th, 2024 at about 1:00pm the Livingston County Sheriff’s 911 Center received a traffic complaint reporting that a vehicle was driving at high rates of speed while traveling south on Avon-Geneseo Road, approaching the Village of Geneseo. Sheriff’s Deputies did respond to the area and located the vehicle, which had pulled into the Livingston County Government Center parking lot.

Deputies made contact with the driver who was identified as Steven VanSkiver, 40 years old of Dansville, NY. A passenger in the vehicle was also identified as Darryl DeFazio, 61 years old of Rochester, NY.

During the investigation, a check of VanSkivers NYS DLIC revealed that his driving privileges had been revoked in NYS. Further investigation revealed both VanSkiver and DeFazio were in possession of a quantity of cocaine, which they had attempted to conceal from Deputies. Both VanSkiver and DeFazio were taken into custody at this time.

VanSkiver was arrested and charged with felony Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, felony Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fourth Degree, felony Tampering with Physical Evidence, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree, as well as NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law Violations.

DeFazio was arrested and charged with felony Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fourth Degree, and Tampering with Physical Evidence.

Both VanSkiver and DeFazio were turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for processing. The District Attorney's Office was contacted in regards to bail due to the felony level charges. It was recommended that both VanSkiver and DeFazio each be held without the possibility of bail due to having two or more prior felony convictions.

VanSkiver and DeFazio were later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part (LC-CAP) at the Livingston County Jail before Justice Porter. The Judge did commit both to the custody of the Sheriff and remanded them without bail.

The Livingston County Public Defender’s Office was present and represented both Vanskiver and DeFazio at the court arraignment for their defense. The Livingston County District Attorney’s Office was notified and also appeared to represent the people.
