EXCLUSIVE: Town of Wellsville in 'tax collector dilemma' - emergency meeting called

The Town of Wellsville is in a prickly situation...at a time when it can't afford it. The Town has called an 'emergency meeting' -

LEGAL NOTICE OF EMERGENCY SPECIAL MEETING:

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that an emergency special meeting will be held by the Wellsville Town Board, Allegany County, State of New York at the Town Office, at the Wellsville Municipal Airport in said Town on December 16, 2020 at 6 p.m. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss Tax Collector for the Town of Wellsville.

Danielle Osgood, Town Clerk

BY ORDER OF THE TOWN BOARD

Wellsville Regional News has learned from several sources, confirmed by the Allegany County Board of Elections, that Tax Collector-elect Deb Ramsey (D-Wellsville) will NOT accept the position. She has reportedly notified the town via an electronic message, but legally, she must submit a signed letter, which must then be forwarded to the Board of Elections. If that letter isn't formally presented to the town before the special meeting, things become complicated. If the legal formalities are met, then the town board, during its special session, can appoint a replacement for 2021. Next November, a special election would be needed to complete the unexpired term of office.

In October, the Wellsville Republican Committee urged a special write-in campaign:

Please Vote for Sally Boehl as a Write In for Wellsville Town Tax Collector. Sally is well-known in the community. Sally is currently the town Deputy Clerk and would be doing both at the town hall.  Sally has 14 years of managerial experience at Tractor Supply and Dollar General where many of you know Her from. Sally has been a part of the community and has been for more than 20 years now.

The write-in campaign was needed because the candidate deadline to be on the ballot had passed.
It's significant because tax bill are mailed out in early January. In a time when funds are tight, budgets are stretched and state funding is delayed...town taxes are important, more than ever.
