City of Olean Computer Network Back On Line

April 17, 2020—Olean—This morning the City of Olean Management Information staff identified and disrupted a computer virus attack before City employees began the workday. The staff disconnected the City’s computer servers and shut down systems to prevent the virus from gaining a larger foothold across the City’s network.
By noon the staff located the source of the breech and were able to restore partial service to the City. E-mail service and the on-line portals for water and sewer payments have been restored.

"I appreciate the hard work and diligence of our tech staff in isolating the breech and getting the essential services back on-line and apologize to our residents for any inconvenience caused the temporary lack of service," William J. Aiello, Mayor of the City of Olean said. "Because of the COVID-19 pandemic the City had to quickly adapt our computer system for our employees to work at home and apparently that made us vulnerable to an attack."
