WELLSVILLE - Dr. David H. Graham passed peacefully on August 22, 2018 after a battle with Lewy Body Dementia in Wellsville, NY. He was born on September 28, 1946 in Batavia, NY to James and Dorothea (Hanser) Graham. On July 9, 1987, he married Melissa Kear, who survives.
Dr. Graham was raised in Leroy, NY where he graduated from Leroy High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in creative writing (1968) and medical degree from the University of Rochester in 1973. From 1974-1975 he completed a rotating internship at Harrisburg Hospital, Harrisburg, PA. He then traveled to Yonkers, NY where he completed his family practice residency at St. Joseph Hospital from 1975-1977. In the early 80’s, Dr. Graham came to Allegany County setting up medical practices in Belmont, Angelica, and Wellsville. In addition to private practice, he held staff positions at Alfred State, Alfred University, Wellsville Central Schools, (prisons) and the Wellsville Manor Care Center. He served as the president of Jones Memorial Hospital Medical staff from 1990-92 and was a member of the Allegany County Board of Health from 1994-98. Dr. Graham concluded his medical career with Delphi Hospitalist Services based in Rochester, NY. In 1984, he received the National Health Service Corps Award for Undeserved Communities and the STEL Housing Program Community Service Award in 2000.
Dr. Graham was an active participant in the Players of Allegany County performing in many productions. He enjoyed writing plays, short stories, and poems. He was a very dedicated father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and attending his children’s sports and outdoor activities.
Surviving in addition to his wife are eight children, Heather Collins and her husband Dr. Michael Collins, Douglas Graham, Elizabeth Graham, Emily Graham, Hannah Graham, Melissa Graham, David Graham, and Monica Wilson (North Carolina); sister Janet Jenkins (Mansfield, PA); brother James Graham (Little Rock, AR); grandchildren Claire Wilson and Olivia Wilson; many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life for friends and family will take place at the family home (4150 Hillcrest Drive Ext, Wellsville, NY) on Sunday August 26, 2018 from 6 p.m.-8 p.m., with a short service beginning at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the David. A. Howe Library.
