I would like to personally thank the League of Women’s
Voters of Cattaraugus (LWVCA) and Allegany Counties for their efforts to host a
public debate between myself and my opponent. Public debates offer the people
an opportunity to hear each candidate and what they stand for. It also gives
insight into how a public official will present themselves when they represent
the public they serve. Included here is an excerpt of what I have received from
the LWVCA and I am appreciative of their efforts to give voters a choice.
“The League of Women Voters of Cattaraugus and Allegany
Counties (LWVCA) was pleased to offer to host a debate between Sheriff Whitney
and challenger, Mr. Mackney, prior to the September 13 primary election this
year. Mr. Mackney accepted, but Sheriff
Whitney declined, deciding to go in another direction via a candidates’ debate
to be sponsored and made public by WJQZ.
Therefore, our proposed date of September 10 will be cancelled. The
purpose of a political debate is to promote public learning about the office
and candidates. It is for the benefit of
the electorate. We are disappointed to not be part of the process in this
case. Our objective is to participate
wherever possible to promote the non-partisan goal of engaging and educating
voters in Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties.”

President, LWVCA
