Wellsville: Town Board has issues with Code Enforcement

The Wellsville Town Council expressed dismay Wednesday night that a worker had been hired in the Code Enforcement Office without board approval. According to the meeting agenda, the man was serving as an intern at a pay rate of $11/hour. Board members said if the employee isn't certified or trained, he really can't do inspections. Another member asked if he can't do field work, does he only perform clerical tasks? That prompted the comment from a member who said "I can't believe that office generates so much paperwork that extra help is needed." Town Supervisor Shad Alsworth said, "the damage has been done." He said the worker shouldn't be penalized financially since he did put the hours in. The Board then unanimously passed a resolution that created the temporary clerk position in the Code office, retroactive to March 1, 2018. However, no billable hours would be allowed after April 13th. Deputy Supervisor Michael Miller said the board may invite the employee back, but additional research must be done first. The Board also approved paying the worker and agreed that they will ask Code Enforcement Officer Rob Marsh to attend the May meeting to answer some questions.
