The Blind Association Receives ACAF Grant

(L to R):  Kathryn Kirsch, Director of The Allegany County Association for the Blind; Denis Dahlgren, ACAF Executive Director; and Janette Thomas, Secretary of The Allegany County Association for the Blind.

The Allegany County Area Foundation recently awarded a $500 grant to the Allegany County Association for the Blind and Visually Handicapped.  This award was made possible from the earnings of the Allegany Fund held by the Foundation.
The  Allegany County Association for the Blind and Visually Handicapped is partnering with the David A. Howe Library to enable those that are blind or with low vision to use the latest in audio visual technology. Kathryn Kirsch,  director of the Blind Association,  explained that this grant money will be used to help purchase a DaVinci Pro desktop video magnifier which will be a benefit to the community.  It allows the user to read with large print, and it will also read the material to the user.
The DaVinci Pro device will be housed primarily at the David A. Howe Library, but in the future it can possibly be loaned to other Allegany County libraries as it becomes more popular.  This desktop video magnifier has the ability to magnify text and picture detail for a clear, bold display as well as convert full page text to speech with the capability of reading a full page or selecting an area of text.  Housing this device in the library will serve to create community awareness of the technology and services offered by the Allegany County Blind Association.
The office for The Allegany County Association for the Blind is now located next to Tami's Flowers on Jefferson Street in Wellsville. For more information please call 585-593-2023 or e-mail: blind4@verizon.net.
The Allegany County Area Foundation holds assets over 9 million dollars and continues to add new funds each year. The endowed funds continue to grow in perpetuity to enrich and improve the lives of our Allegany County citizens.

If you would like more information on how you can provided a legacy of hope and good will in our community, please contact the Allegany County Area Foundation at 585-808-8444.
