HOUGHTON, NY - Former U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis of South Carolina will speak at Houghton College on September 20, 2017, on the topic of "Republicans and the Climate: Exploring Market-based Solutions to Climate Change.” The event is free and open to the public, and will take place in the college’s Paine Science Center at 7:00 p.m.
Elected to Congress in 1992, Inglis represented the Fourth Congressional District of South Carolina (Greenville and Spartanburg, S.C.) from 1993-1998 and then again from 2005-2010.
In July of 2012, he founded the Energy and Enterprise Initiative (E&EI) at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. E&EI is a nationwide campaign aiming to explore and promote conservative solutions to America’s energy and climate challenges. Inglis continues to serve as the executive director of the initiative, rebranded as republicEn.org in the fall of 2014.
Inglis was awarded the 2015 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award in recognition of his work addressing climate change. Other distinguished recipients of this award include former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, former U.S. President George H.W. Bush, Senator John McCain (R-AZ), and Representative John Lewis (D-GA 5).
Houghton College’s sustainability coordinator, Brian Webb, remarks that “in our polarized political climate, it's rare to find a politician who crosses boundaries in order to work for the common good of our country. Mr. Inglis succeeds at integrating his genuine concern for the environment with his conservative ideology in a way that serves to benefit both causes
