Press Release:
Allegany County Legislators Phil
Stockin, Judy Hopkins and Curt Crandall, the Legislative Representatives for
District 1, have formally announced that they will seek re-election during this
years Allegany County Legislature election process. Legislative District 1
includes the Towns of Angelica, Belfast, Caneadea, Centerville, Hume, Granger,
and Rushford as well as the Village of Angelica.
Stockin, Hopkins, and Crandall
point to the positive actions that have taken place in Allegany County over the
last several years, the ongoing efforts in economic development, and the
leadership that they have provided to help achieve constructive changes. Some
of the accomplishments they reflect on are the continuation of addressing the County
workspace needs, which is an integral part of delivering needed services as
well as meeting State demands for mandated programing. They bring out the fact that Allegany County
has gone from a $3.8 million deficit to over $30 million in positive fund
balances, a healthier financial report, and improved Bond ratings for our County.
Job retention and the interest of several manufacturing facilities in Allegany
County have recently occurred as well as renewed interest in private
development for retail and hospitality, more job growth, and private development
is planned for the near future. Agriculture and tourism have been expanding in
the County, and they support the continuation of these efforts. They are proud
of their record and accomplishments and feel that a background in business,
education, and local government coupled with old-fashioned common sense, which
they each possess, makes them suited for a return as Legislative
Representatives for Allegany County, District 1.
Phil Stockin, who lives in the
Town of Caneadea, was recently appointed to fill the vacancy created when David
Pullen stepped down earlier this year. Phil brings to the Legislature many
years of local government experience having served as the Town of Caneadea
Supervisor for 31 years. His experience in grants, budgeting, contract negotiations,
water & wastewater districts, and general government operations prove him valuable
to the future of Allegany County as a Legislator. Phil also brings a background in education, retiring
several years ago as Headmaster of Houghton Academy, a position he held for 28
years. “I have called Allegany County home my entire life. I am honored to
serve at the County level and anxious to help make County government run as
efficiently as possible,” said Stockin.
Judy Hopkins, who lives in the
Town of Hume, has served in the Legislature since 2015, following the passing
of her husband Ted. She was re-elected
in the general election in 2016. Committee responsibilities include: Resource
Management (Chair), Human Services (Vice-Chair), Planning & Economic Development,
Ways & Means, Public Safety, and Public Works. She is the legislative representative to the
Industrial Development Agency (Vice-Chair), Soil & Water Conservation
District, and Cornell Cooperative Extension Boards. In 2016, Judy was appointed Chair of the
Allegany County Heroin & Opioid Addiction Ad Hoc Committee. She has worked diligently to build a County
coalition of new and existing resources to combat serious addiction issues in
the County. Hopkins said, “Allegany County has been my home since 1968; my
grandchildren are the fifth generation on our farm. It is an honor to serve in
the Legislature, helping Allegany County to prosper, while maintaining its
unique quality of life.”
Curt Crandall, who lives in the
Town of Belfast with his wife Cathy, is currently Chairman of the Board of
Legislators and has held all major leadership positions as a County Legislator
such as Chairman of the Ways & Means Committee, Chairman of the Budget
Committee, and Majority Leader to mention a few. His experience both in and out
of the Board Room continue to contribute to the well-being of Allegany County.
“I have been blessed to serve as a Legislator and play a part in meeting the
challenges County Government faces,” said Crandall, adding that, “I am proud of
the headway made so far and look forward to facilitating, with your support, continued
success for the County.”
Phil Stockin, Judy Hopkins, and Curt
Crandall are asking for your support, and look forward to meeting with
individuals and groups in the district to discuss the future plans they have
for Allegany County.
