Obituary: Donald W. Lopes, 73, Cuba


Donald W. Lopes, 73, formerly of Chapel Street, Cuba, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Cuba Memorial Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit after a lengthy illness. Born on Feb. 10, 1944, in Greensburg, PA, he was a son of Clifford E. and Hazel I. Farren Lopes.  On November 11, 1965 he married the former Letti Perrine, who predeceased him on June 16, 2002.  On June 26, 2003, he married the former Kathryn C. McDonald who predeceased him in November of 2007. Don was a graduate of Hempfield High School and later graduated with an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institute of America in New Haven Connecticut.  While residing in Cuba he was employed as the Head Dietician at Cuba Memorial Hospital.  Later he went to work for Attica State Prison where he was Food Administrator until his retirement in 2008.  He was a lifetime member of the Cuba Fire Department where at various times held the offices of past Chief, past President, District Coordinator and enjoyed serving as chairman for the Dairy Week Parade for many years.  He was also a member of the Cuba VFW, Attica American Legion, and the Hyattsville Maryland Masonic Lodge. Don was an avid golfer, hunting, cooking, and spending time with his family. Surviving are a son, Douglas Lopes of   Rockford, Illinois; a daughter, Deborah (Duane “The Favorite”) Hopkins of Cuba; 4 Grandchildren, Victoria, Kassondra, Ambria, and Matthew; a brother,            Lynn (Christy) Lopes of Youngstown, PA; Several Nieces and Nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and wives. Friends and family may gather at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, Inc., 9 Bull Street, Cuba, on Friday, May 12, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 10-11:00 a.m. at which time Memories of Don will be shared.  Funeral Honor’s accorded by members of Cuba Fire Department will be held on Friday evening at 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
