BATH, NY – The Steuben County Public Health Department and partners are sharing updated overdose data for December 2024: 20 overdoses were reported, 2 fatalities were reported, and 8 instances of Narcan administration were cited.
In December, four of Steuben’s overdose records cited opioids as a suspected drug causing the overdose. Twelve overdose records did not note a specific substance or were not able to be accessed for a full review, and the remaining 4 records indicated another substance was suspected to be the cause of an overdose. Other reported substances included methamphetamine, alcohol, cocaine, and others.
In total, 288 suspected overdoses were reported in 2024–a decrease of 17% from the 348 overdoses reported in 2023. The number of overdose fatalities also decreased to 8 in 2024 compared to 13 in 2023.
“We are pleased to see the number of overdoses decreasing” said Public Health Director, Darlene Smith. “Steuben County Public Health and its partners are continuing to implement new and innovative solutions, which can further reduce the effects of the opioid epidemic.”
