Alleged Allegany County gunman jailed without bail, faces
14 counts
A 40-year-old man is in the Allegany County Jail without
bail after being charged Sunday with first-degree attempted murder of a police
officer. The situation unfolded Sunday afternoon following reports of shots
fired in the Town of Wirt. Johnathan T. Russell allegedly opened fire on
Troopers with a sawed-off shotgun, stole a dump truck before leading police
through the woods on foot. State Police aviation and a drone from the Allegany
County Sheriff’s Office assisted, along with countless troopers and municipal
police. The charges include the following felonies:
-Second-degree assault
-first degree reckless endangerment
-second degree attempted murder (2 counts)
-first degree attempted murder of a police officer (3
counts)
-burglary
-Grand larceny
-first-degree robbery with a deadly weapon
-criminal possession of a weapon
-criminal use of a firearm
He was also charged with two lesser misdemeanor counts.
Arraigned in court, Russell was remanded to jail without bail.
