House Republican Leader Expresses Concern Over Denial of Press Access to State Capitol
HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre/Mifflin) Tuesday expressed his great concern over a Department of General Services directive not allowing credentialed members of the media into the state Capitol.
Prior to a Tuesday press conference, several credentialed members of the media were denied access to the state Capitol building.
“No reporter should be turned away from Pennsylvania’s seat of government. Doing so is a clear violation of our Constitution,” Benninghoff said.
“While it is appropriate during this unique time in our history to have some limits on public access to the Capitol, the media plays an important constitutional function that keeps the public informed of what government is doing and holds us accountable. Whether today’s events were deliberate or a mistake, the Wolf administration should take every step necessary to ensure that today’s denial of media access never happens again.”
