Obituary: Helen D. Thomas, 92, Belmont

BELMONT - Helen D. Thomas, 92, of Old State Road, passed away Monday, January 25, 2021 at home with family by her side. She was born October 29, 1928 in Short Tract, the daughter of the late Walter and Louise (Baker) Deats. On December 20, 1947, in Freedom, she married Edward Thomas who predeceased her on April 19, 2006.


Helen grew up in Short Tract, and was a 1946 graduate of Fillmore Central School. She operated the Short Tract Telephone Company switchboard in Short Tract until 1958, and was employed by Dinion Coil Company and Perry Knitting Mill in Fillmore until 1966. She has resided in Belmont since 1963. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, square dancing, camping, and most of all - her grandchildren. 

She is survived by: two sons, Dale R. (Susan) Thomas Sr. of Belmont, and Robert “Fuzzie” (Susie) Thomas of Bath; two daughters, Terry (Duane) Gelser of Dalton, and Suzanne Thomas of Belmont; eight grandchildren, Becky, Cristy, Denise, Wendy, Kurt, Jeremy, Dale Jr., and Cheyenne; seventeen great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was predeceased by: a brother, Russell “Jake” Deats.
