ACCORP Corporation: Letter to the Editor

They say change starts with one.

The ACCORD staff and Board of Directors wishes to extend sincere appreciation to the many individuals, groups and organizations who contributed to ACCORD’s mission to serve the community throughout 2020. Volunteer support significantly increased, along with monetary donations, which ensured programs could meet the multiple critical needs that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our great community has proven once again that generosity prevails, especially in the most trying of times. Every person who shared what they had to give lessened someone’s fear and worry. What an impact you have had!

Hundreds of volunteers from Allegany County school districts, colleges, community organizations and private citizens supported the delivery of critical food to children and families during 2020, as food needs significantly increased due to layoffs and school closures at the height of the pandemic shutdown. Supported by Foodlink, Allegany County’s regional food bank, ACCORD staff and volunteers hosted 18 drive-through food distributions from March-December 2020, distributing approximately 5,000 boxes containing more than 200,000 pounds of food to families. Very special thanks go to those who volunteered to deliver food to individuals and families who were unable to leave their homes.

ACCORD’s Community Action Angels Program was able to safely distribute toys or gift cards to 440 children in December 2020, almost double the number served in 2019. Many families struggled with layoffs and reduced hours and would not have been able to afford gifts for their children without this help. Through the support of many generous donors, multiple volunteers and staff, the gift program made Christmas much brighter for so many parents and children!

ACCORD is the designated Community Action Agency serving Allegany County through a variety of local, State and Federal grants to provide services to individuals, children and families living in the crisis of poverty. Sincerely,
