Building in Almond on fire; ammo stored inside set off, posed threat to volunteer firefighters

A second working structure fire kept volunteer firefighters in Allegany County busy on Thanksgiving Day…except this time, fire crews came under unintended gunfire. Almond, Alfred Station and Andover fire departments were called to a building fire at 10:45 a.m. at 1724 County Road 2 in Almond. The first arriving chief said it was a small barn or shed and called it a working structure fire. The flames were visible from I-86. Moment later, a concerning message from the second assistant Almond fire chief – “Almond 502 to all responding units, be advised there is live ammunition being set off in the barn right now…proceed with caution." He also reported the building contained a tractor and other farm-related equipment. The Arkport Fire Department was called in to cover the Almond district. There were no initial reports of injuries. Fire investigators are probing the cause. State Police are also on scene investigating.
