Allegany County: Fire damages Town of Independence barn

Fire departments from two counties and two states were pressed into service late Sunday night when a fire ignited inside a barn at 1406 Hallsport-Independence Road in the Town of Independence. Whitesville firefighters were alerted at 11:03 p.m. Additional help was called in from Willing, Wellsville, Andover, Scio and Genesee, PA. Scio station two, Ulysses and Harrison Valley provided stand-by coverage. According to tax records, the barn is located on a dairy farm and there was a rush to evacuate animals, according to radio reports. Those records show the owners to be William Wahl, Jr. and Kitrina Wahl. Several investigators responded to the scene to determine the cause, which remains under investigation. Most fire units left the scene by 12:50 a.m.
