Angelica, NY – In
celebration of the 100th anniversary of ratification of the 19th amendment,
Angelica Community Radio is pleased to announce it will host "Votes for
Women! 19th Amendment Book Club,” a four-part reading and discussion series
developed and sponsored in part by Humanities New York.
The "Votes for Women! 19th Amendment Book Club”
includes the following titles:
• February
27: Seneca Falls and the Origins of the Women’s Rights Movement by Sally G.
McMillen
• March
26: Elizabeth Cady Stanton: An American
Life by Lori D. Ginzberg
• April 30:
Women Will Vote: Winning Suffrage in New York State by Karen Pastorello and
Susan Goodier
• May 28: A
Woman’s Crusade: Alice Paul and the Battle for the Ballot by Mary Walton
Participants read books in advance then come together in
Angelica at 6:00 p.m. for a facilitated discussion, delving into themes of the
long fight to win suffrage.
“Something special happens when we talk about what we read
with others in our community,” says Sara Ogger, executive director of
Humanities New York. "With its thematic focus, this reading and discussion
program offers an unusual twist on the standard book group format by making
time for thinking deeply about one idea, over time, from a variety of
perspectives. In this way, texts can become catalysts for personal reflection,
civic engagement, and cultural understanding.”
"Votes for Women! 19th Amendment Book Club” will be
facilitated by Rusty Tobin, a local historian interested in the political
activities of women in New York State in the first half of the 20th Century.
She is currently researching the suffrage movement in Allegany County.
This program is free and open to the public. Fifteen copies
of each book are available for participants to borrow on a first-come,
first-served basis, so pre-registration is required. For more information about the series dates,
times, locations, and acquiring books in advance, email info@wraq.com or
