Genesee Valley Central School will hold its second annual Family
STEAM Night on Thursday, February 6 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Students in grades
PK-12, parents and community members are invited to attend.
Family STEAM Night will showcase the projects and programs
available through the instructional program at Genesee Valley. The evening will
feature a guest appearance from a nationally-known scientist, hands-on
demonstrations and activities, and opportunities to connect with local
businesses, industry leaders and colleges and universities. A free spaghetti
dinner will be provided in the cafeteria.
Jason Dunion will be the featured speaker. He is an
Associate Scientist at the Hurricane Research Division at the National Oceanic
& Atmospheric Administration. Dunion specializes in satellite remote
sensing of hurricanes and has developed several new satellite products for
monitoring tropical cyclones and dust storms. He will be sharing about his
unconventional journey into the field of hurricane research. Dunion is a
featured scientist in the JASON learning curriculum which is built around
real-world phenomena and guided by practicing scientists.
A “maker floor” will encompass interactive activities
including: inventing your own creature in 3D, an archaeological dig site from
the Neolithic time period, a Star Lab, as well as demonstrations from GV’s
Odyssey of the Mind and Robotics teams. Dr. Scott Simpson, assistant professor
of chemistry from Saint Bonaventure University, will be conducting a series of
hands-on interactive chemistry demonstrations.
