At 1:40 p.m. Sunday afternoon The Bath Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to 56 Liberty Street for a reported structure fire. Fire Chief Matt Glashauser reported on scene with smoke showing in a three story building with apartments on the upper two floors and businesses on the first. Chief Glashauser then requested a second alarm which, brought in The Bath VA, Kanona, Hammondsport, Pultney to the scene and Savona to man the Bath station in case of another call. Bath Ambulance and AMR Advanced Life support were also dispatched with Bath Fire. Bath Electric Gas and Water Systems were also called to turn off the utilities to the building.

Bath Village Police officers were first on scene and ran into the building before the trucks arrived on scene to evacuate all the tenants in the building. The interior crew made their way to the third floor and ran into heavy smoke conditions in the hallway. The first two interior firefighters made entry to the apartment and could hear someone making faint noises and they found the occupant of the apartment and pulled him out of the room and to the top of the stairway with burns and smoke inhalation. He was taken down to the street level where The Bath Volunteer Ambulance crew and AMR Advanced Life Support started treatment and transported. A Life Flight helicopter was requested to meet them for a transfer.

The fire crews inside the structure were able to locate the fire and made a great stop on the progression of the fire and conduct a thorough overhaul to make sure the fire was completely extinguished. The Steuben County Fire Investigation Team was called into investigate the cause of the fire which is still ongoing at this time.
The Steuben County Area Chapter of the Red Cross was called to the scene and are housing all the tenants in the building that have no where else to go until the building can be made habitable again.
The fire was called under control at 2:29 p.m. and all units were clear at 5:36p.m.
