Wellsville: 'Burrous Building', now 23 North, scores major funding victory

The former Burrous Building on North Main Street in Wellsville, now called "23 North" has scored a major funding victory that will likely change the village's landscape. State officials say that a $4.5 million grant has been approved that will allow '23 North' to transform the Main Street landscape. The funding will green light the transformation of the structure to open the door for village and potentially town offices to relocate to the 4,000 square foot  commercial property. In addition, 16 safe and affordable housing units will be located on the upper floors of the three story complex.
Allison Green is the Executive Director of Alfred Housing which launched this project in conjunction with Two Plus Four Construction. She said "this is a great day for Wellsville." She also commended state senator Cathy Young for her support.
The building is a former furniture store that experienced a structural collapse that raised the ire of village residents, who demanded the demolition of the property. The village rejected that option. Robert Sobeck, who once led Alfred Housing, retired last month. Today, he is now the Chairman of Alfred Housing and has been retained as a consultant for the 23 North project. He said this afternoon that he is "very thrilled" and called the announcement "huge." Sobeck said bids should be let in June with construction to begin in July.
