The Canaseraga
Central School recently received a grant check for $450 from the Allegany
Endowment Fund which is managed by the Allegany County
Area Foundation. This grant money
will be used to help support their Laundry Life Skills Project, a program to
help students with disabilities develop functional skills that will increase
their autonomy and their ability to lead independent lives.
Kari Crosby, a Special Education Teacher at the Canaseraga Central School, explained that this grant money will help them purchase a stackable washer and dryer for the self-contained special education classroom. This will help facilitate the successful acquisition of functional self-care skills while increasing student independence.
As a result of the Laundry Life Skills Project, students will: (1) increase autonomy through application of key functional skills (tracking washing/drying cycle times, measuring detergent, sorting clothing, following specific steps and completing an everyday task); (2) follow visual clues and sequencing taught in the curriculum in order to successfully launder clothing; (3) increase problem-solving and self-awareness skills that lead to use of a washer and dryer; and (4) increase self-confidence by learning a new skill.
The Allegany County Area Foundation holds assets of over 9 million dollars. The endowed funds continue to grow in perpetuity to enrich and improve the lives of Allegany County people.
