“I am so pleased to welcome this extraordinary group of men and women to our faculty,” remarks Dr. Jack Connell, provost and dean of the faculty at Houghton. “They are people of competence and character, and I am confident that they will serve our students with excellence and enrich the academic life of this community.”
Houghton’s new faculty members include:
* James Bowman, interim instructor of music industry, who comes to Houghton from Buffalo Public Schools, where he focused on the sound engineering, music production, audiovisual, software, and sound effect needs. Bowman’s background in the sound production world includes extensive work at the First Calvary Missionary Baptist and Antioch Holiness churches in Buffalo.
* 1981 Houghton graduate Dr. Mark Caruana, who begins his first academic year as the dean of Houghton College Utica, the college’s Associate of Arts program in Utica, NY. He brings ministerial experience to the role, specifically with growing multiethnic congregations, and is considered a content expert regarding refugee resettlement and transition.
* Dr. Timothy McGarvey, joining the Houghton community as professor of instrumental music and conducting as well as director of instrumental activities. McGarvey hails most recently from Iowa and has teaching and ensemble administration/conducting experience at prestigious institutions such as Northwestern College, University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and Western Michigan University.
* John McKeone, director of Houghton’s new partnership with Peaceprints of Western New York out of Buffalo, NY, who enters a role focused on bringing higher education opportunities to formerly incarcerated individuals. McKeone comes from the Westminster Economic Development Initiative, a micro-finance lending model for start-up businesses in communities on Buffalo’s West Side.
* Dr. Anna Pettway, who brings a wealth of experience to her role as assistant professor of psychology and assistant department chair for assessment. In addition to clinical work across Michigan and in Atlanta, Georgia, Pettway has served in research and teaching assistant roles at Spring Arbor University and the University of Detroit Mercy. She has also taught as a professor at Bryan College, Concordia University-Ann Arbor, and Oakland Community College.
* Professional voice performer and 2005 Houghton graduate Dr. Kimberly Prins Moeller, returning to the college as assistant professor of voice. Her teaching experience includes prestigious Christian academies and collegiate-level voice instruction at Lakeland College and Alverno College. She has also served as music director, vocal coach, and accompanist for numerous productions and at several opera programs.
* Music education professional Dr. Floyd Richmond, who joins the Houghton faculty as interim professor and coordinator of music education. Richmond’s background includes several band director positions at Christian academies and high schools in Indiana and Missouri, as well as collegiate professorship and music education program coordination at institutions such as University of Valley Forge, West Chester University, and Ball State University.
* Deborah Rice, coming to the college as assistant professor of management and business administration as well as department chair for business and economics. She has more than 25 years of experience in organizational development, human resource management, and strategic leadership in a variety of nonprofit and for-profit contexts. Rice co-developed and led Missional Movement International, a consulting, coaching, and training ministry focused on assisting Christian leaders.
* Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Data Science Ryan Yates, who brings experience in developing computer script, user interface, functional framework, programming language, and software development. Yates is a doctoral candidate at the University of Rochester computer science program and has previously served as an instructor at Houghton and a teaching assistant at the University of Rochester.
