There was a time, not all that long ago, when serving as an elected official was noble. It wasn't about the money. It wasn't about the power. It was about that foolish concept of trying to help...to make things better...to serve the people. But, that was yesterday, I guess.
Outside of Washington, DC this morning, a high ranking member of congress, Capitol Police officers and congressional aides were shot in what police say was a "deliberate act." The victims were practicing for a congressional baseball game. A baseball game.
All across the country, from Rep. Tom Reed to other members of congress and beyond have condemned the attack and praised police.
This isn't supposed to happen in America.
Here locally, elected officials are more likely to be attacked by words than gunfire. Wellsville mayor Randy Shayler, legislative chair Curt Crandall and village trustee's across the county don't have to dodge gunfire. They do, however, have to dodge biting words and comments. I'm fine with words. I'm fine with opinions. I'm not fine with attempted assassinations. We have apparently entered the 'duck and cover' world.
Why...why would any rational person choose to seek election for public service in today's society? Your life falls under a microscope. You're called an asshole. Rep. Tom Reed - no opinion - holds town hall meetings knowing he will be condemned. Not saying he shouldn't be, but it is a challenge.
I suppose candidates should know that when they seek public office, there is risk. Risk of being hated. Risk of being humiliated. But it shouldn't include the risk of being executed.
I hold those in power by using my words and my vote.
I'm a dreamer. Always have been. I believe in the 'system.' It may not be the best, but it's not North Korea.
If you are currently an elected official or somebody thinking about running...good luck...and thanks for doing what most choose not to do. And yea...always be prepared to duck.
