ALBANY, N.Y. – The Freedom Award, a national award established in 1996 by the Department of Defense through Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), was created to draw attention to the support provided by the Nation’s employer community. To date, only 235 employers have received the award throughout the United States.
More than 17,000 nominations have been received since 2011.
For the organization’s above-and-beyond support for its military employees, the NYSP have been named one of 30 finalists for the Department of Defense’s highest employer award, the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. This year’s finalists were selected from 3,064 nominations submitted by Guardsmen and Reservists. The group represents large and small employers from almost every industry, as well as from state and local governments. ESGR received nominations for employers in all 50 states, Guam-Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia.

The New York State Police organization provides 22 workdays of military leave annually, and offers pay differential for drill periods, annual training and deployments. During deployments, family members continue to receive health, dental and life insurance for up to five years. A military employee’s retirement benefits continue during periods of military service.

The NYSP prioritizes the hiring of military members, ensuring that each new police academy class will include an average of 40 veterans. Roughly, one-third of the organization’s work force is current or former military members.

Dennis Lutz, New York’s ESGR Chairman and a retired US Army Major General states, "Employers that support their military employees’ service make all the difference in the world, and the New York State Police are one of the nation’s best at doing it."
