Obituary: Mary Alice Niedermaier, 81, formerly of Andover

Mary Alice Niedermaier, 81, formerly of Andover, passed away Friday (March 3) at Wellsville Manor Care Center.
Mrs. Niedermaier was born on March 5, 1935 to Jack and Jane (Hawkins) White. She was a 1953 graduate of Canisteo Central School.
Mary was a cloth weaver for Stearns and Stearns Textile Mill in Hornell from 1975 until her retirement in 2000. Previously, she worked the Niedermaier Farm in Andover for 17 years.
Mary is survived by four sons, Butch (Kelli) Niedermaier, Tony (Dawn) Niedermaier, Billy Niedermaier, all of Andover and John (Jenna) Niedermaier of Odessa; three daughters, Melinda (Lynn) Sherwood of Danville, Ky., Theresa (Randy) Bowman of Damon, Tex. and Kristina (William) Wallace of Shinglehouse, Pa.; 21 grandchildren, Heather Niedermaier, Alexis Niedermaier, Kelsie Niedermaier, Kohler Niedermaier, AJ Niedermaier, Amber Niedermaier, Hayleigh Niedermaier, Hayden Niedermaier, Kyla (Philip) Betts, Jessica (Patrick) Pirrizolo, Johnny Niedermaier, Shane (Jamie) Sherwood, Christy Peach, Michael Sherwood, Willie Sherwood, Jimmy Nevol, Jordan Bowman, Jarredd Bowman, Joshua Bowman, Eric (Abi) Wallace and Paul (Phylicia) Wallace; and 11 great grandchildren, Nora Betts, Jensen Betts, Matthew Sherwood, Joshua Sherwood, Bradley Peach, Christopher Peach, Mason Peach, Noah Sherwood, Lauryn Sherwood, Mary Sherwood and Max Wallace.
She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Marlene Niedermaier.
Mary had a deep and abiding love of God, family and friends. She was never one to embrace the worldly pleasures of life but rather the simple and powerful pleasures of building memories and friendships. She treasured the times of family barbecues at the Niedermaier Camp. Mary was a very compassionate woman which motivated her to volunteer her time at the Allegany County Office of the Aging and to rock babies at the local daycare center. Though compassionate, Mary had a core set of beliefs that at times caused her to be outspoken. She was not afraid to speak her mind and stand up for the causes she believed in.
Mary had other interests. She had a long and enduring love of reading books, especially one with a good mystery plot. She wrote a couple of children’s books and had them published. Additionally, she enjoyed watching television and was lights out when it came to answering game show questions.
Per Mary’s wishes, there will be no prior visitation. A celebration of her life will be held at a time to be determined. Arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover.

Memorial contributions in Mary’s name may be made to SPCA Serving Allegany County, 1374 NY-19, Wellsville, NY 14895 or to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675-8517.
