Warning, and advice to gun owners from Allegany County Sheriff

February 7, 2018

For Immediate Release:

As those of you who are pistol permit holders may already be aware, January 31st was the date by which many people should have submitted their pistol permit recertification to the New York State Police.  If you obtained a pistol permit before January 15, 2013, then January 31st was the last day you were to submit your recertification.  For those of you who obtained a pistol permit after January 15, 2013, you must recertify by the 5 year anniversary date from when you originally obtained your permit. At this time many permit holders from Allegany County have failed to recertify as required.
I know many people (including myself) are angry about this law, and are skeptical of its ultimate intent, but I must impress upon you the importance of complying with the law and recertifying. At this time no enforcement action is being taken against those who did not recertify before the deadline and the State Police will still accept your recertification.
However much you may disagree with the SAFE Act and its aims, please do not jeopardize your eligibility to possess a pistol in the future by failing to follow the law.  The State Police are available to answer any questions about the recertification process you may have.

You can also find information about how to recertify online at
