The Allegany County Treasurer's Office has released a statement trying to distance themselves from the county budget, your tax increases and homes being taken from you by out-of-state bidders online who never come here and take care of the property.
They are also making it clear they don't want to communicate with the towns and villages and assessors as property assessments are out of control.
Here is a truth: As a county legislator, I was there when the county treasurer sat in every executive session when we talked about the budget. The treasurer led the conversations. That was not in the latest statement from the office trying to pretend the workers in that office do nothing but sit on their hands until people come in and pay taxes.
They also didn't tell you what happens in public sessions. The treasurer brings the budget to the legislators in a public meeting.
There are more numbers that will come out soon that will make sense and what seems to make sense to taxpayers is simple. Why does the treasurer's office keep telling us they are lowering rates but our taxes continue to go up? Where is the discussion by our leadership with public utility companies increasing rates for our residents? Have you noticed the change in your utility bills?
As your Allegany County Treasurer, I know my job duties and limitations on what I can do, but I also know as an elected official working with the legislators and our elected state officials, we can make a difference to help you the taxpayer. Why does the treasurer's office take all of those trips to Albany with the Allegany County Legislators that we pay for if the office doesn't do anything? I went to Albany three times for one day as a legislator. It was all I needed to know that we need to be in Allegany County fixing the problems here. The other counties aren't there to help us and going to Albany is a waste of time and money. State officials visit us, take our phone calls and we have video meetings. I don't mind staying in Allegany County when we are off duty and spending taxpayer money at our local restaurants, not making Albany richer.
