Curbside service is keeping the David A. Howe Library busy in Wellsville

Curbside service is keeping the David A. Howe Library busy in Wellsville.
The library opened for business last week, and Director Nic Gunning says business has been brisk as people begin to come back.
Lots has changed, books are ordered by calling the library at 585-593-3410 or by going to the library’s website. The books or materials can then be picked up at specific times at the entrance to the Nancy Howe Auditorium. A table there is manned by a staff member who hands over the requested materials. Pick up times are set by the library but are between noon and 2 p.m. and 4 and 6 p.m. weekdays and noon to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
Gunning says that right now they are taking a wait and see approach to opening up for full service.
The books and materials that are returned to the library’s drop box in the parking lot or the front door are wiped down with disinfectant and put on a table for 72 hours before they are returned to the shelves.
While some library programming has been delayed, such as the author Susan Wiggs visit during library week (now postponed until next year) other events, like the annual Summer Reading Program are full speed ahead. Those interested can call in or go online to sign up. They will get a bag of goodies and information when they sign in. This year’s theme is mythology. The library staff is also looking at holding some events outdoors.
With the reopening, some things are getting back to normal, like book deliveries from the Southern Tier Library System which just delivered hundreds of books to the library. Other services like getting a specific book from a different library in the system is still not operational. There may be a two- or three-week delay in the process for the time being.
Gunning says staff are going through the latest delivery and the materials will be ready for the shelves in a few days.  Go online to check out the new arrivals.
“We’re very pleased with the positive response we have had,” Gunning said.
