Wellsville, NY - Have you always wanted to leave your mark
on this county? Art for Rural America is calling for submissions from any
Allegany county-based artist for the design of a mosaic artwork. The nonprofit
organization was awarded funds for a community-created 3’x5’ mosaic that will
be placed at the entrance of their public garden in Wellsville. With the aid of
a grant from the Tri County Arts Council, students and community members can
work together to create a long-term art installation under the guidance of
local ceramic artist, Alex Minnick.
The call is for a mosaic tile sign to be 3 feet by 5 feet
and to hold the words "The Fassett GreenSpace". It may feature plants
or produce or elements of the history of Wellsville or something else deemed
appropriate. The theme is open and designers are welcome to discreetly
incorporate their name in the work. Designs may be mailed to AFRA, PO Box 126,
Wellsville, NY 14895 or emailed to ArtForRuralAmerica@Gmail.com. The deadline
for submissions is May 15, 2019 with a decision announced by May 25, 2020. When
the submission period ends, Art for Rural America's board and Minnick will
choose the winning submission.
The actual production of the mosaic will be accomplished
on-site at the Fassett GreenSpace in work sessions organized by ceramic artist
and project manager, Minnick. He will host 12 consecutive weeks of workshops,
free and open to the community, to construct the work. At these work sessions,
hosted every Wednesday from 4-6pm from June to August, participants will
prepare clay, glaze pieces, and assemble the mosaic as a team. The original
designer is welcome to join these community work sessions if interested or may
allow community members to transfer the drawing into clay. The group will try
to incorporate various materials from the Fassett GreenSpace, such as keys
pressed into clay, old brick pieces, and other artifacts.
