Wellsville: Lions Club ready for Trout Derby



Final preparations are being made for the 31st annual Greater Wellsville Trout Derby happening this weekend. Home base, or Fish Central, will be in Island Park but the event spans 7.5 miles from County Road 29 in Yorks Corners to Riverside Campground in Scio. Dean Arnold oversees the Lions Club event. He says on Friday evening, they’ll stock the river with 450 tagged fish with guaranteed prizes totaling more than $25,000. The fish come from Whispering Pines Fish Farm in Bliss. Fish Central opens at noon on Friday to register last minute participants. The kitchen also opens at noon and breakfasts are served Saturday and Sunday morning’s beginning at 5:30. a.m.
Mr. Arnold also that the Lions Club is not connected with any vendors, with the exception of one who will be selling bait.
Camping is allowed in the park free of charge but the following rules apply:
 1)    The only fires allowed in the park proper are those in the standing BBQ fixtures.  The park proper is the area of the park to the right as you drive into the park.
2)    In the park proper, driving on the land is not allowed.
3)    Except for bringing in a fish. no parking is allowed in the parking area next to Trout Derby HQ.
4)    Camping is not permitted until the Wednesday April 24th and it is for people fishing in the Derby only.
5)    11 p.m. until morning is to be quiet time and loud parties and other noisy activities are to be discontinued at 11 p.m.
On Tuesday, the Genesee River level, just north of Jones Memorial Hospital, was 5.8 feet. The National Weather Service said the level should remain steady through the weekend. Right now, forecasters are calling for sun on Saturday with a chance of showers for Sunday. Daytime temperatures should be in the 50's and will drop into the 30's at night.
