Fillmore - Karolyn Ann Papke McCumiskey of 10891 Claybed
Road died Monday, December 24, 2018 in the Absolut at Houghton Nursing Home.
She was born on November 1, 1945 in Wellsville, a daughter of the late Homer
and Marguerite Clark Papke.
Karolyn was a graduate of Fillmore Central School, class of
1963, with many friendships that remain strong today. During her high school
years her family hosted Walter Franco, a foreign exchange student from Ecuador,
and later his family opened their home to Karolyn, at age 14, as she traveled
as a foreign exchange student. Later she attended Morrisville State College and
afterward she worked at Sonyea Mental Hospital for a short time before earning
her beautician license from the Continental School of Beauty in Olean. After
her children were older she worked at Bell’s Supermarket, Kwik Fill and the
Absolut at Houghton.
Karolyn married Dennis McCumiskey and had four children. She
often shared fond memories of family gathering with aunts, uncles and cousins
from her childhood. There are numerous childhood stories of summer trips with
Aunt Kate. She truly cherished time with her family which included holidays and
trips to the Big Rideau each summer. Many of her holidays and trips where
filled with laughter and hours of playing euchre. In later years you could find
her reading suspense novels or watching movies. She was also extremely proud to
be “Grandma YoYo” to Annora and Quinn. Her face would light up the moment she
saw them.
The family is very thankful for the entire staff at the
Absolut at Houghton and Pastor Joel Stroud.
Surviving are her four children, Scott (Rowena) McCumiskey
of Wyoming, Shawn McCumiskey of Wellsville, Shannon (Jason) Karcher of LeRoy,
Sarah McCumiskey of LeRoy, two grandchildren, Annora and Quinn Karcher of
LeRoy, two sisters, Elaine Worthington of Hunt, Lisa (Dale Cassidy) Papke of
Hume, a half-sister, Carol Konarski of LeRoy, three nephews, David (Jane)
Konarski, Caleb and Cory Cassidy, two nieces, Lori Hawkins and Tori (Rodney)
Cassidy and many cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
