Whalen Slams Reed for Favoring Rich over Struggling Families
Geneva, New York — Today, Charles Whalen — a Democratic
congressional candidate in New York’s 23rd district — slammed Rep. Tom Reed
(R-NY23) for voting in favor of the
House tax bill.
“The GOP promised that tax reform would target middle-class
families. Now we see that meant working families will take the hit as
Republicans reward their wealthy donors,” says Whalen.
“Large corporations and the rich will get a massive handout,
while the residents of our district will be left holding the bag,” Whalen adds.
We need tax reform that boosts working families by
encouraging job growth and raising wages. Tom Reed voted for a bill that will
do none of that. Instead, it:•Enables tax cuts for the 1% by ending deductions that
support teachers, veterans, university students, and people with medical
conditions;
•Takes away an employee’s chance to deduct moving expenses,
but lets companies keep their deductions — and get other tax advantages — when
moving jobs overseas.
•Scales back the state and local tax deduction, resulting in
an immediate tax increase for many residents of the 23rd district;
•Takes back the family tax credit after 2022 — to make room
for more cuts for the wealthy; and
•Busts the budget by adding $1.5 trillion to the deficit
over a decade.
Republicans say their plan will grow the economy as the
benefits “trickle down.” Whalen, an economist who has reported on the effects
of taxes and spending policies for the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office,
says that’s absurd and isn’t supported by any analysis: “Those tax cuts will
not pay for themselves. Not accepting that is an attempt to fool yourself or
others. Residents of the 23rd district won’t be fooled. In 2018, they will
repeal and replace Tom Reed.”
