Houghton College to Launch "Klassics 4 Kids" Music Outreach

By Megan Fisher

HOUGHTON, NY - On November 9, 2017, Houghton College’s Greatbatch School of Music will hold its inaugural “Klassics 4 Kids” music outreach program from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.“Klassics 4 Kids” is designed to expose local high school and middle school students to a broader spectrum of music. These budding young musicians – who are already enrolled in music ensembles and programs at their home schools – will have the opportunity to experience life as a musician at Houghton.
As part of the “Klassics” programming, the Houghton College Symphony Orchestra will play music prepared for its upcoming November 10th concert. Orchestra conductors will provide historical framework, facts, and more about each work in order to provide perspective and get students engaged. Members of the orchestra will perform excerpts for learning and listening purposes, and then play the full piece for the attendees. Among the selections for this “Klassics” event will be the overture from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute.
Additionally, instrument demonstrations will expose students to those which their school programs may not have, such as bassoon, English horn, or oboe. Included in this experience is explanation of the instrument’s purpose in different pieces, particularly if it has a solo or significant arc in the piece the orchestra will be playing.

“Klassics 4 Kids” begins with two programs each academic year – one in the fall, and one in the spring – and plans to add future dates as interest and participation grow. Contact
