BATH – Some 104 miles of county roads in 20 towns are slated
for work in 2017 according to Steuben Count Public Works Commissioner Vince
Spagnoletti. Spagnoletti estimated the total cost of the work, ranging from
crack seal repairs to reconstruction and blacktopping at $5.9 million, with
$5.4 million paid through the state Consolidated Local Street and Highway
Improvement Plan. The projects include:

The remainder of the county Public Works 2017 road budget of
$6.7 million will be used in the event material costs increase or for work on
Steuben’s remaining 45 miles of poor roads, Spagnoletti said. Steuben’s 683
road miles are now rated as 25 percent better than the state average and 36
percent better than the U.S. Department of Transportation’s rating of the
nation’s rural roads.. Road improvements in 2016 included 48 miles of roads
recycled, blacktopped and reconstructed, with an overall “poor to fair” rating of
36 percent, compared to 48 percent rated by the state in the category, and 55
percent of all U.S. rural roads.
