Rep. Reed says town hall sessions have value

Congressman Tom Reed (R-Corning) opened his weekly media call with an announcement that on Saturday, he'll hold another series of town hall meeting in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties. He has held more than 200 sessions to date. Reed was asked about Rep. Chris Collins' statement that he (Collins) never has and never will hold a town hall meeting...suggesting they are a waste of time. While not directly disputing Collins, Reed says he finds great value in the session. He told reporters this meeting the outreach allows him to look at constituents "eye to eye" and address the issues of the day. While Reed said while he also utilizes social media, he places "great importance" on the town hall event. He said it allows everyday people to ask questions and hear answers directly.
Another reporter asked the local congressman is he was concerned that not everyone who attended was from the district...perhaps brought in to disrupt. "I don't plan to change a thing," Reed stated. He said one goal is to bridge the divide and bring unity.
Ignoring Ithaca?
Rep. Reed hasn't held a session in liberal-leaning Ithaca in some time, prompting one reporter to ask him is he was "avoiding Ithaca." Reed said that he certainly wasn't ignoring Ithaca, noting that he has an office there and staff actively engage with local residents on issues.
Reed said regarding Saturday's events, he anticipates he'll field questions about the Affordable Care Act and tax reform...but added, he's open to any question.
