The Foundation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo awarded the inaugural Natalie Mattimore Lewis Kindness Counts Character Award to Colleen Hennessy, a 7th grade student at Immaculate Conception School of Allegany County. The presentation took place at GALA 22:6, the 17th annual Catholic Education dinner held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.
During his remarks, The Most Rev. Richard J. Malone, Bishop of Buffalo, praised the honoree, saying, “As a student at the Wellsville School since kindergarten, Colleen has demonstrated kindness and compassion beyond her years, working hard to achieve success in and out of the classroom. Much like Natalie, who believed ‘kindness can change the world,’ Colleen is a special young woman and a worthy recipient of this new annual award.”
The Natalie Mattimore Lewis Kindness Counts Character Award is given to a faculty-nominated 7th grade Catholic school student who exemplifies Natalie’s spirit of kindness. The award includes a $1,000 tuition voucher and a $100 cash award.
Colleen was nominated by Nora Burdick, principal, who said, “I knew I had to submit her name for consideration after reading about Natalie, as she sounded so much like our dear-hearted Colleen. Our faculty and staff recognize Colleen as a ‘go-to student.’ She treats each and every person she meets with kindness, and is a standout among her peers.”
