Allegany County seeks to create new prosecutor position in the Office of District Attorney

The Allegany County Public Safety Committee Wednesday afternoon advanced a measure to create and fill a new part-time position of Assistant District Attorney. The annual salary would be $40,000. The Office is still reeling from the death of a full-time prosecutor. District Attorney Keith Slep said the full-time position likely won’t be filled this year, since, he said, people “are leaving in droves across the state.” Slep said there has been a hint of interest in the part-time job. Legislature Chairman Curt Crandall said the new position should alleviate some of the pressure on the DA’s Office. It was noted that the District Attorney’s Office needs the staffing given six new murder cases under prosecution. The measure passed by a 15-0 vote. The full board will vote of the resolution later this month.
