This year’s Prism performance, titled “Let There Be Light,” will feature roughly one hundred student performers, as well as Houghton College faculty and members of the community.
According to Armenio Suzano, director of the Greatbatch School of Music, this year’s theme reflects the overarching story of grace that begins in Genesis 1 and finds fulfillment in the birth of Jesus.
“We wanted to convey the eternal pursuit of God towards mankind,” says Suzano. “The birth of Jesus is the seminal moment in which the Light that existed in God for all eternity, and was shared with creation in Genesis, finally comes to the world in the form of a baby to redeem the world from the consequences of sin.”
The evening will showcase musical selections including Andre Thomas’ Gloria (Glory to God), Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves, and Franz Josef Haydn’s “In the Beginning” from The Creation. Prism will feature performances from all of the major Greatbatch School of Music ensembles, including the Houghton Symphony Orchestra, College Choir, and Men’s and Women’s Choirs.
Rev. Julian Cook (director of Houghton College Buffalo: East Side) will be narrating passages of scripture between musical selections. His wife, opera-trained soprano Sigourney Cook, will also appear as a featured guest, performing a special arrangement of “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.”
“Prism is a glorious and awe-filled experience, designed to welcome both the performers and the audience to the Christmas season,” says Greatbatch graduate student Ellenore Tarr. “Prepare to hear time-tested favorites, unique arrangements, and a wide variety of genres, all interwoven to reinforce the timeless truth of God's love for His creation.”
Prism: Let There Be Light will premiere at Browncroft Community Church on Friday, December 6th at 7:30 p.m., with a second performance in Houghton College’s Wesley Chapel on Saturday, December 7th at 8p.m. The program runs just under an hour and a half. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. The Saturday performance also includes an optional dinner at 6p.m. Combined dinner/concert tickets are $30 for all attendees.
