OGH, BRMC earn top safety scores

Olean General Hospital, a member of Upper Allegheny  Health System and a Kaleida Health affiliate,  has earned an ‘A’ for hospital safety in a spring 2019 hospital quality rating by The Leapfrog Group, a national, independent, non-profit rating organization which measures quality and safety in U.S. hospitals. Bradford Regional Medical Center, also a UAHS member hospital, achieved a ‘B.’ Both hospitals increased a full letter grade from Leapfrog’s fall 2018 reporting. OGH is the only hospital in the Southern Tier and one of only four hospitals in Western New York to earn an ‘A’ in the Leapfrog safety report.
The designation recognizes the hospitals’ efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer healthcare.
The Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Score uses measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce an ‘A,’ ‘B,’ ‘C,’ ‘D,’ or ‘F’ score for hospitals across the U.S. The score represents a hospital’s overall performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.
“These latest safety grades represent a phenomenal improvement over the last several Leapfrog cycles and demonstrate an intense focus with respect to patient safety,” said Timothy J. Finan, president and chief executive officer, UAHS, BRMC and OGH.  “Credit for this very significant achievement goes to our employees and medical staff members who have all responded to the opportunity to continually enhance patient safety at our Olean and Bradford hospitals. They have been unrelenting in their commitment and focus with respect to patient safety improvement and I am very excited by what they have accomplished. It’s a significant differentiator. Enhancing the quality and safety of our patient care efforts is hands down our number one priority. No one report represents a full picture of hospital quality but this report is one more indicator that our efforts to improve quality and safety are working. We extend our sincere thanks to the employees and medical staff at OGH and BRMC for their tireless efforts to raise the bar on patient safety.”
“To be recognized nationally is an accomplishment the whole community should take pride in,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO, The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals that earn an ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade are making it a priority to protect patients from preventable medical harm and error. We congratulate hospital leaders, board members, staff, volunteers and clinicians who work so hard to earn this.”
Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
