FINCH: ADMINISTRATION IS COMPLICIT IN
ONGOING PRISON VIOLENCE
A
Statement by Assemblyman Gary D. Finch (R,C,I-Springport)
“What
happens when you close correctional facilities across the state, only to
double-bunk and double-cell inmates? What happens when you refuse to install
canine units and cancel plans to bolster package screenings at the same time
positive drug tests are skyrocketing inside these facilities? What kind of
message does it send when you limit effective disciplinary tactics for brave
correction officers while fighting for increased wages, free iPads and
taxpayer-funded degrees for an increasingly violent, gang-affiliated prison
population?
“Since the
governor started closing prisons, inmate assaults on correction officers are up
a staggering 50.8 percent. This governor has turned his back on our correction
officers. Harrowing attacks like the recent incidents at Auburn Correctional
will continue to happen unless the administration reverses course. The governor
must listen to the courageous men and women in law enforcement as intently as
he listens to liberal activists who care more about rapists and murderers than
the New Yorkers who are fighting for all of us on the front lines of public
safety,” said Finch.
