This year’s theme was “Free Speech. Free Press. Free Society.” Students were asked to discuss these fundamental constitutional rights in the context of present-day issues. The essay contest was open to area high school students. Three members of the Bar conducted a blind judging of the essays.
The first place winner was Alannah Allen, a senior at Scio Central School. Ms. Allen was also the winner of last year’s Law Day Essay Contest. She is the daughter of Shawn and Christie Allen. Alannah was active in soccer, basketball and softball. She plans to attend SUNY-Brockport to study pre-med majoring in biology. Alannah received $300 for her first place essay.
The $200 second prize was awarded to Megan Lewandowski. Megan is the daughter of Jennifer Smith, and is a junior at Fillmore Central School. Megan participates in soccer, cheerleading and softball. She plans to attend college after graduation at either SUNY Brockport or SUNY Geneseo and major in psychology.
Two students received $100 Honorable Mention prizes. One of them was Aidan Hart, a sophomore at Wellsville Central School. Aidan’s parents are Joe and Christy Hart. Aidan’s extracurricular activities include football, basketball, golf and trap shooting. He also enjoys hunting and the outdoors. Also receiving a $100 Honorable Mention prize was Sofia Marra of Belmont. Sofia, the daughter of Heather and Anthony Marra, is a freshman at Genesee Valley Central School. She participates in student government, Big Brother/Big Sister and Dance Arts in Olean.
