WBNG: NYSDOT worker struck by tractor-trailer on Route 17 dies from injuries

NICHOLS (WBNG) – New York State Department of Transportation employee Dennis Matthew Howe has died from injuries sustained when a tractor-trailer struck his vehicle on Route 17 in Tioga County last week, a family member tells 12 News.
The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office said Howe was in his vehicle parked on the shoulder of Route 17 westbound in Nichols around 9:50 a.m. Wednesday when it was hit by the tractor-trailer.
Authorities said he was airlifted to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre with serious injuries. According to his niece, Howe passed away on Monday.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 37-year-old man from Ulster, Pennsylvania, was ticketed for moving from his lane unsafely and failure to exercise due care (Move Over Law).
The highway between Lounsberry and Nichols was closed to traffic for several hours while officials worked at the scene.
A GoFundMe account set up for Howe’s medical expenses has raised more than $12,000.
