WELLSVILLE, NY (March 26, 2019) – Memorial Day is a day set
aside to honor all deceased members of the American armed forces. For the past
six years, the front lawn at Jones Memorial Hospital (JMH) has been transformed into
a “Field of Flags” to honor the memory of veterans who have died.
This year, the members of the sponsoring organizations -
JMH, the Wellsville American Legion Post 702 and Auxiliary, the Sons of the
American Legion and the Legion Riders – will place the flags on Armed Forces
Day, May 18. The field will remain in place through Memorial Day, May 27. Each
flag will have a card with the deceased service member’s name and branch of
service, and the name of the person who sponsored the flag. If you would like
to make a $5 donation in honor of your deceased veteran, please stop by the
Wellsville American Legion, 23 Jefferson Street or Jones Memorial Hospital’s
Business Office or the hospital switchboard. Cards and donation must be
returned by May 18. Checks may be made
out to Jones Memorial Hospital. Flags can also be purchased by contacting Sue
Kays at (607) 765-1916 or by email skays@stny.rr.com.
All proceeds from the Field of Flags are donated to LEEK
Hunting & Mountain Preserve, an outdoor recreational facility for wounded
and injured service members and veterans. LEEK is located in Northern
Pennsylvania (www.leekpreserve.org).
