BATH – Work on a popular county route from Bath to southern
municipalities is expected to begin Feb. 4, with the scheduled replacement of
the County Route 22 bridge over the Canisteo River in the Town of Cameron. Work
by Twin Tiers Constructors, of Scottsville, on a new $2.3 million, 207-foot
bridge crossing the Canisteo is expected to be completed by November. The cost
will be absorbed through 95 percent federal funding and 5 percent county
funding. County Engineer Steve Catherman said plans call for a change from
three spans and two supports to two spans with one pier. The change will
improve flow and reduce debris collected under the bridge, as well as reduce
construction time and long-term maintenance costs, Catherman said. The bridge
is part of a common route for travelers between Bath and travelers from
Hedgesville, Jasper, Woodhull and Addison, with 540 vehicles crossing it daily.
Given the high cost of a temporary bridge, detours will be set up to
accommodate emergency vehicles, cars and trucks, county Public Works
Commissioner Vince Spagnoletti said. Emergency responders already have been
advised of a 5-mile detour on County Route 110 effective Feb. 4, Spagnoletti
said. Other detours will be clearly marked, according to Spagnoletti.
• Detour for cars: 7.4 miles, CR 110 and CR 80.
• Detour for trucks: 15 miles. CR 119 to Rathbone, CR 21 and
CR 80 back to CR 2
“We know this will disrupt travel and we’ll work to lessen
the impact,” Spagnoletti said. “But the bridge is almost 60 years old and it’s
time to replace it.”
