Volunteer firefighters across Allegany County and beyond were saddened Sunday when news began spreading around noontime that long time firefighter and past Wellsville fire chief Robert "Bob" McCracken had died. In 2016, the fire service honored McCracken by naming the Wellsville Training Facility in his honor.
McCracken was the classic and traditional firefighter. He bolted when the alarm sounded, drove "swiftly" to the scene and was as serious as serious can be at a fire scene.
In recent years, Bob called (Wellsville) Manor Hills home. It was an adult living facility. Bob was saddled with an oxygen mask...and yet he persevered. Arrangements are currently being developed.
