KUTZTOWN, PA – Alfred University junior Seth Spicer (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) broke a 30-year old school record in the outdoor decathlon with his third-place finish Friday at Kutztown (PA) University's Mondschein Multi Invitational meet.
Spicer accumulated 6,471 points to break the school record in the decathlon (6,403 points) set by AU Hall of Famer David O'Brien in 1987. Spicer's record-setting setting performance was clinched when he turned in a personal-best time of 4:27.79 in the decathlon's final event, the 1,500-meter run. He also had a personal-best in the discus throw (38.12 meters) and had solid marks in Friday's other events: the 110-meter hurdles (15.77 seconds); the pole vault (3.83 meters); and javelin throw (38.13 meters).
On Thursday's first day of competition, Spicer had 3,367 points while setting a personal best mark in one event. On Thursday, Spicer competed in the 100-meter dash (11.69 seconds), long jump (6.33 meters, personal best), shot put (12.00 meters), high jump (1.79 meters) and 400-meter dash (51.55 seconds).
Spicer finished behind winner Jack Flood of Cortland (7,021 points) and runner-up Connor Christopherson of Cortland (6,831 points).
